Bill Brandt


 

Bill Brandt was born May 2, 1904 in Hamburg Germany. He went to public schools. He was bullied in school because he was German and it was when WW1 took place, he told people he was from south London. He found art and photography interested him in the 1920s when he was undergoing treatment for tuberculosis. Bill traveled to Vienna, where he was taken up by Dr Eugenie Schwarzwald. She introduced him to Ezra Pound and Ezra introduced him to Man Ray. From there he became Man Ray's assistant for several months. There he witnessed Surrealist film and saw a new way of things and started to go with it. He likes taking pictures of dark areas and situations in the environment and city life. Bill was put in the International Photography Hall of Fame in 1984.
